When will they dismantle the Met?

Before Rupert Murdoch had to appear before Parliament, there was the Milly Dowler story. The Guardian broke the story on News International’s hacking of the Murder Victim’s phone. Now Scotland Yard is going after the Guardian for embarassing it – using the UK’s draconian Official Secrets Act to compel the Guardian to reveal its sources for that story. The Guardian is saying: OH HELL NO!

The Guardian‘s editor, Alan Rusbridger, said on Friday: “We shall resist this extraordinary demand to the utmost”.

The Union representing Journalists in the UK is similarly coming to the rescue. They are going to go to war against the Met on this one. Scotland Yard will be before a judge at the Old Bailey on 23 September. Stay tuned.
