Okay, we know from previous experience that Shell’s oil production in Nigeria has been woefully misrepresented by the company. It seems that they may now be lying about what might be the biggest spill in a decade:
Shell is saying that last week’s oil spill off the coast of Nigeria “has now been dispersed and contained”—but if that report seems like it’s too good to be true exactly one week after an approximately 40,000-barrel spill made news as Nigeria’s worst offshore spill in a decade, it might be.
The devastation to local fisheries is going to be only one of the problems of not dealing with this properly. The slick won’t stay in Nigerian waters, who gets to pursue Shell for damages? Will anyone?
