The (p)rime (m)inister’s barb about now not being the time to ‘commit sociology’ reveals not just incomprehension but a deep-seated anti-intellectual bent which we should all be concerned about. Our Government is supposed to be able to rise above knee-jerk responses. It is supposed to make reasoned and long-term decisions. This does not mean a reliance on sociology alone, but the whole gammut of social and hard sciences and the lenses they bring to bear on complex issues. Even if your ideology provides all the answers, you may want to interrogate it — yannow — just to be sure.
