All laws are local … the paradox of a new deontological ethics?

I was originally directed to this post by Cory’s description of it here.

In truth the bit I wanted to draw out of it was better expressed in the first posting than in the originating piece of work here.

What had me fascinated was the wonderful assertion about all Laws being local. Moreover, no law knows how local it is. In short what we have here is a reformulation of the Kantian Categorical Imperative. Or perhaps it is simply an important modifier.

So instead of simply acting in accordance with a law which we would will to be universal for all, we should also recognize that the same law is not in fact universal. The paradox of a new deontological ethics? Perhaps I’ll have more to say on this later.
